Scope and content
Born June 24, 1907, Dean Maxwell S. Thomas was a highly honored Dean of Mechanic Arts at FAMU, educator, advocate for students, and native of Ocala, Florida. The documents in this collection consist of reports, correspondences amongst FAMU presidents and faculty, and documents that highlight his involvement in organizations such as the Orange Blossom Classic Committee and FAMU Foundation. In addition to Dean Thomas’ professional documents, news articles honoring his life and correspondence to his wife, Jaqueline Holloway-Thomas, expressing condolences can be found.
System of arrangement
The collection consisted of two boxes, one with some wear and tear and the other relatively new. One .5 cubic foot box f was transferred from the Active Collection room and had been identified as box level. A one cubic-foot box was donated by Courtney Thomas and arrived in good condition at the Black Archives on December 15, 2022.
There was no original order to the collection. However, for the 1 cubic foot box donated, correspondence was organized by subject, and organization documents were categorized and paper clipped together. Where possible, items remained together, and all rusted paper clips were replaced with plastic ones. New categories were then created, and those folders were placed in acid-free folders and boxes. The materials were grouped by subject and material type using new subheadings and filed in alphabetical and chronological order. The collection was prepared for digitization and was placed in new archival folders. The collection was re-housed in linear feet archival boxes, which expanded the collection to 2 boxes.
