Box 28 - Rosewood Massacre

Box 28 contains materials from the Rosewood Massacre Collection dating from 1991–1995 and is arranged alphabetically by claimant surname. This box includes files for individuals such as Bell (including Elisha Bell), Baines (Lucille and Alphonso), Bailey (Wesley), Atkins (Minnie Bradley), Ames (Marie), Brockington (Sandra and Ernest Sr.), Brown (Addison Jr., Richard Bernard, and Theresa Brown Robinson), Burns (Adolphus Jr.), and a subject file on Rosewood Children, among others.

The folders document the claims process and supporting evidence and include Rosewood Claims Bill checklists, claims information forms, extensive correspondence between claimants and state officials or attorneys such as Robert A. Butterworth, Gregory Durden, Frank M. Beisler, and Guy David Robinson, as well as property affidavits (often multi-page), affidavits, handwritten notes, memoranda, envelopes, and legal or personal records such as birth certificates, death certificates, Social Security records, census records, and obituaries.

For example, a typical folder may contain a claims checklist dated July 1994, multiple pieces of correspondence regarding claim status, and a detailed property affidavit outlining losses, while others include supporting documentation such as family history information, certified records, or memoranda related to claim verification. Collectively, the materials in Box 28 reflect both the administrative processing of Rosewood compensation claims and the personal documentation used to substantiate survivor and descendant eligibility.
