Box 30 - Rosewood Massacre

Box 30 contains materials from the Rosewood Massacre Collection dating from 1994–1995 and is arranged alphabetically by claimant surname, with an additional administrative/legal file at the beginning of the box. This box includes files for individuals such as Doctors (Arnett T. and Yvonne T.), Dunson (Virginia Foust), Edwards (Berthina Fagin, Lillie Mae, and Dorothy), English (Rayford), Ellis (Brenda), Foust (Lazell, Lovie Louise, Paula, Rodney, and Dorrall Lewis), Evans (Willie), Floyd (Leroy “Gordon”), Fields (Elaine), Gibbons (Chalene Bradley), and Goins (Arnett T.), among others.

The first folder consists of administrative materials related to legal notices, invoices, and published articles, including documents from newspapers such as the St. Petersburg Times, Miami Herald, Gainesville Sun, and Orlando Sentinel, as well as receipts, invoices, fax cover sheets, and legal notices pertaining to the Rosewood claims process.

Subsequent folders document individual claim files and typically include Rosewood Claims Bill checklists, claims information forms, correspondence between claimants and state officials or attorneys (notably Robert A. Butterworth, Gregory Durden, Frank M. Beisler, and Guy David Robinson), affidavits, and detailed Rosewood property affidavits describing losses. Many files also contain supporting documentation such as handwritten notes, memoranda, envelopes, legal documents, maps of Levy County, land descriptions, family trees, vital records (birth certificates, death certificates, Social Security records, driver’s licenses), and occasional legislative or legal references (e.g., CS/HB 591).

For example, a typical folder—such as those for the Doctor or Foust families—may include a claims checklist from 1994, multiple pieces of correspondence discussing claim eligibility and verification, a multi-page property affidavit outlining land ownership and losses, and supporting materials like maps, family lineage documentation, or vital records used to substantiate the claim. Collectively, Box 30 reflects both the administrative coordination of the claims process and the detailed personal and legal documentation submitted by claimants and their descendants.
