Box 29 - Rosewood Massacre

Box 29 contains materials from the Rosewood Massacre Collection dating from 1994–1995 and is arranged alphabetically by claimant surname. This box includes files for individuals such as Brockington (Earnest Sr.), Coleman (Pat A.), Cooper (Donald), Crawford (Bernice, Charles Julius, and Mabel), Hall (David, John, and Linda), Crockett (Brenda, Darryl, and William), Daniels (Mary Hall), Davis (Evelyn, Freddie, and Helen), and Dill (Carolyn), among others.

The folders primarily document the Rosewood compensation claims process and include Rosewood Claims Bill checklists, claims information forms, extensive correspondence between claimants and state officials or attorneys (including Robert A. Butterworth, Gregory Durden, and Frank M. Beisler), affidavits, and multi-page Rosewood property affidavits detailing losses. Additional materials include handwritten notes, memoranda, fax cover sheets, envelopes, legal notices, and supporting personal documentation such as birth certificates, death certificates, Social Security records, driver’s licenses, obituaries, and occasional interview or biographical materials.

For example, a typical file may contain a claims checklist from July 1994, multiple letters discussing claim eligibility and status, and a detailed property affidavit outlining land and property losses, while other folders include supporting legal and personal records such as certified documents or memoranda related to claim verification. Collectively, the materials in Box 29 illustrate both the administrative handling of claims and the personal histories and documentation used to substantiate survivor and descendant claims related to the Rosewood Massacre.
